Dr. Katrina Armstrong is an assistant research professor with the UMaine Marine Aligned Research, Innovation, and Nationally-recognized Education (MARINE) initiative. She is responsible for advancing the initiative by facilitating, coordinating, and engaging in collaborative research partnerships involving faculty and staff from multiple research and academic units across the program and in collaboration with statewide partners and community members to address meaningful research challenges and develop a suite of transdisciplinary opportunities to advance the mission of UMaine MARINE.
Katrina’s research interests focus on the conservation and management of marine organisms, embracing a transdisciplinary approach by incorporating knowledge from genetics, ecology, and local communities. Her past work has included studying the population dynamics of Kemp’s ridley sea turtles and bluefin tuna in the Gulf of Mexico, examining the fate of corals and their associated endosymbionts after transplantation in Palau, and underscoring the pivotal roles that fishermen and community members play in restoration.
